Davis Phillips International Lecture, Thursday, March 30, 2006, 5.00 p.m., Schiciano Auditorium, Pratt School of Engineering The Rt. Hon. the Lord Patten of Barnes, CH, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Last British Governor of Hong Kong, and former European Commissioner for External Relations, will speak on “The Old Atlantic Partnership in a New Century,” Lord Patten’s lecture will draw on his many years of political experience and statesmanship. He was elected a member of Parliament in 1979 and retained the post until April 1992. That month, he was appointed governor of Hong Kong, a position he held until 1997 when he oversaw the return of Hong Kong to China. He was chairman of the Independent Commission of Policing for Northern Ireland set up under the Good Friday Peace Agreement. Patten served as European Commissioner of External Relations from 1999 to 2004, and in 2005 became a member of the House of Lords. He was appointed chancellor of Newcastle University in 1999, and elected chancellor of the University of Oxford in 2003. Patten is the author of three books. His most recent book, published in 2006, is Cousins and Strangers: America, Britain and Europe in a New Century. In it, he outlines his path for international reconciliation and partnership. Tony Judt Workshop, Monday, April 24, 2006, 11.00 a.m. to 2.45 p.m., Room 130 Franklin Center Convenors: Kenneth Surin, Literature; Herbert Kitschelt, Political Science, and Malachi Hacohen, History. Tony Judt’s new book “Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945” has been viewed as a landmark, albeit controversial, contribution to European history. It is important to that to some kind of assessment to be made of its arguments. The Center for European Studies will sponsor this workshop in which faculty and graduate students will discuss the book. |
